John Whittingdale has represented Maldon in Parliament since 1992.  On this website, you will find how to contact him as well as examples of some  issues and projects he has recently been involved with.

There are also links to the local Councils and other local information which should be of use to you if you live in the District.  If you are a constituent and would like to get in touch, John would be very happy to hear from you.  If you are an organiser of a local group, a teacher at a local school, or involved in a local business which you feel would benefit from a visit or a meeting, do let John know.

The majority of the former Maldon and East Chelmsford constituency forms the basis of the new Maldon seat.  Additionally, the areas around South Woodham Ferrers come in from the former Rayleigh constituency and Stock and Margaretting are added from the former West Chelmsford constituency.  Other wards from the previous Maldon and East Chelmsford form parts of the new Witham and Chelmsford constituencies which are represented by John's colleagues Priti Patel and Simon Burns.

The electoral wards used in the redrawn Maldon constituency are;

Althorne, Burnham-on-Crouch North, Burnham-on-Crouch South, Heybridge East, Heybridge West, Maldon, Essex East, Maldon North, Maldon South, Maldon West, Mayland, Purleigh, Southminster and Tillingham from Maldon district.  Bicknacre and East and West Hanningfield, Little Baddow, Danbury and Sandon, Rettendon and Runwell, South Hanningfield, Stock and Margaretting, South Woodham Ferrers, Chetwood and Collingwood, and Elmwood and Woodville from Chelmsford district.

John Whittingdale attended a briefing by members of the Royal Anglian Regiment on recent operations including the First Battalion's tour of Afghanistan.

The "Vikings" were there for 6 months in 2009/10 and while much real progress was achieved, they lost 5 soldiers with many more injured.

British Tourism Week

To coincide with British Tourism Week, John Whittingdale visited Osea Leisure Park on Goldhanger Road, Maldon.  The Park is a family business dating back 75 years to 1933 when Mabel Speakman first started providing camping facilities on their farm for visiting pea-pickers. It now consists of 390 owner occupied static holiday homes and 8 lodges with individual plots. The Park has its own private beach on the Blackwater with Clubhouse and offers sea kayaking facilities.

Last year, the company purchased 33 acres adjacent to the park and is using this to provide camping facilities. It is also working with Writtle College and Natural England to develop an ecological and educational leisure park. Last year, it was awarded a Gold David Bellamy Conservation Award. John is pictured with owner Jeannie Robinson, General Manager Colin Downie and Lauren from Writtle College.

Digital Economy Bill

Mr. John Whittingdale (Maldon and East Chelmsford) (Con): I rise with some sadness to speak about the Bill. There is an awful lot in it that I support and that I think is important for the future of the creative industries. However, in almost every case there are still big questions, potential flaws and probably unintended consequences. In each case we might have been able to discover some of those issues and put them right, had we had the opportunity.

I entirely agree with those who have spoken: there is no reason why this Bill suddenly has to have its Second Reading the day the general election is called. The Secretary of State says that there are precedents for that, but I simply do not believe that a controversial major Government Bill, which will have huge implications for so many industries, has ever had its Second Reading the day before wash-up, so that it has no Committee stage whatever.

Libel Tourism

E-mail Print PDF
Mr. Whittingdale: I welcome the Government's statement this morning, which appears to address a number of the recommendations made by the Select Committee on reform of the libel system. However, on the specific issue of libel tourism, is the Secretary of State aware that only last month the Senate Judiciary Committee voiced support for federal legislation in America to allow US courts to negate the judgments of UK courts in libel actions, on the basis that UK courts do not give sufficient recognition to the need for freedom of expression? Does he accept that that is a matter of profound concern that we need to address as a matter of urgency?

Mr. Straw: Yes. The hon. Gentleman properly draws attention to the fact that our defamation laws have developed in rather an unbalanced way. They are now, for example, having a chilling effect on legitimate and important scientific research. We therefore have to bring them back, not into direct symmetry with those of other jurisdictions, but into a better balance.
